Ventura County Interfaith Community – Core Committee Meeting

August 18, 2005

 

·        We welcomed Roslyn Wolin from Sokagakkai to our group.

·        Outreach

o       Susan Monday will try to contact the Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, and Chumash communities

o       Percy will contact Ferial and Leila regarding Muslim participation

o       Tim will contact Camarillo City Hall and find out about getting access to the events calendar for placing literature tables at the events

·        We discussed upcoming visits

o       Tim will try again to contact Nirmal Singh at the Ventura County Gudwara regarding the October 2 meeting

o       We are still on for the November 6th visit to the Hindu Temple

o       Tim asked the group to provide an occasional invitation for a special event at each of the represented religious institutions

§         Rabbi Lotker mentioned that Temple Ner Ami is planning a discussion of forgiveness on 9/24 – Freida will call Tim with the time

§         He also said that it would be OK for Tim to call the Temple office and ask the office to place VCIC on the mailing list for the Megilla, and the email distribution list.

§         Percy distributed invitations for a dinner to support the Afghan Refugee Schools for Girls to be held on September 10th between 4 and 7.  More invitations can be obtained by contacting her via e-mail

o       The group discussed repeating worship venues and the consensus was that we should do so

o       Roslyn said that the Sokagakkai meets in Thousand Oaks every other month.  She will find out whether it is in December or January and try to arrange a visit

o       Percy will try to arrange a visit with the Quaker worship group either in December or January – she will remain flexible and defer to the Sokagakkai group

o       Tim will prepare a presentation on Jainism for a future get together

·        Volunteerism

o       The group told Rabbi Lotker that we would be happy to support the Campus Interfaith ministry in any way that seems appropriate and he will keep this in mind.

o       Tim also asked Rabbi Lotker to request invitations for VCIC visits from other Campus Interfaith clergy

o       Renee and Teri will discuss the possibility of forming an educational outreach to healthcare providers in Ventura County to provide information on appropriate care for people of different religious faiths

o       Susan suggested offering a series of meditation classes at the Camarillo Community Health Care Center

§         Freida will phone the center and explore their interest

o       We looked at the brochures provided by Linda Lowe from the Ventura Youth Correctional Facility.  The group was interested in the opportunities for Community Volunteer Groups.  Teri will contact VYCF and find out what is involved in sponsoring a “living unit.”

o       Freida will bring a poem or prayer for the devotional

o       Tim will print out agendas for use at meetings
