VCIC Minutes

July 13, 2010



Attendees: David Benson, Teri Helton, Linda Lowe, Yahya Merchant, Dara Mohtadi, Joan Stone, and Ros Wolin



Review of Minutes: Accepted by everyone in general. No motion.



Report by Ros Wolin of $410 in account with $50 given by Heltons and approximately $30 to be deposited from recycling.



  1. Feast of Faiths

    1. Sunday, October 17 from 4 to 6. If held at Conejo Valley Islamic Center then time may need to change related to call to prayer for the evening prayer.

    2. It was agreed to by all present that Tim Helton and Yahya should meet with Imam regarding plans for the Feast before Ramadan.

    3. Meal provision to be shared with Conejo Valley Islamic Center. Also to be discussed with Imam

    4. The following to be discussed and agreed upon with the Imam of the Islamic Center:

      1. Number of people we hope to have - !00

      2. Use of round tables for eating and rectangle tables for set up of food and tables to be set up by Islamic Center

      3. Sound system if available

      4. Halal food that Islamic Center will have and that VCIC will also serve catered food.

      5. Tickets to be sold.

      6. Tables will be decorated by VCIC with plates and flatware provided by VCIC

      7. Can VCIC utilize refrigerator, ovens and sinks

      8. Can the Abundant Table provide the salad

      9. PROGRAM:

        1. Imam to welcome and provide brief history of Islamic Center

        2. MC to do introductions and closing.

        3. Music: Are there prohibitions? If so, what?

          1. Taiko Drummers

          2. Keyboard or violin or guitar during or Udoo



  1. Service Project:

    1. Conejo Botanical Gardens on Gainsborough, Meet at 0930 on August 7.

    2. Go north on Lynn, turn right on Gainsborough. Park is on right after Korean Church

    3. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, bring gloves and picnic lunch

    4. Plan to enjoy a tour of the garden



  1. T shirts: David Benson to email Teri with logo sample and Teri to forward it to everyone. Color choice for shirts to be mauve and yellow or gold.



  1. Forum plan for Science and Religion: Conflict or Co-existence

    1. Agreement by VCIC that there be two events with same speakers in order to reach greater number of people in different settings.

      1. First event to be on CSUCI campus on Sunday, February 6, 2011, 4:30 to 6:30 pm

      2. Kellen to make exploratory contact with CSUCI

      3. Suggested date for second event to be after April 24, during Lent and the “University” that is offered by Padre Serra. So event possibly to be held at Padre Serra.

    2. Agreement by VCIC that speakers that are to set general overview be allowed a total of 30 minutes and that representatives from various faiths have 5 to 7 minutes, including time to answer questions.



  1. Visit VCIC Yahoo group if possible.
